Whether online and/or on paper, a co-op map would show people where they can support co-ops in their community.
65 % of Albertans are members of a co-operative. Let's share our ideas and stories in a provincial magazine.
Co-operation among co-operatives
The idea is to create a legacy project for co-ops serving members in Calgary, with co-ops and credit unions coming together and donating the contents of a park. Focus is an all-ages, all-abilities park donation, with a focus on sharing the co-op message of co-operation and the benefits of the co-op model.

The Canadian Co-op Association is proposing a national Co-operative Development Fund to help meet the need of (especially) start-up and newer co-operatives for capital investments. They propose that co-ops & credit unions invest in a national Fund as a long-term legacy project of the IYC. See: www.coopscanada.coop/en/coopdev/Development_Fund. An idea which has been circulating both provincially and nationally is that we pick one day where groups of neighbor co-operatives host an event together, the same event. For example, all over the province on July 7 local International Year of Co -operatives steering groups host pancake breakfasts or family BBQs and these are connected to each over through live video. Be caught wearing a "I am a Proud member of an Alberta Co-op button" and win a prize.
Create a flag, or banner, featuring the IYC logo. All co-ops & credit unions in the province could be invited to fly the flag or post this banner in a prominent place. There could be optional room at the bottom for the logo of the individual organization. A cooperative is very different relative to it's private counterparts. Think Credit Union vs Bank. The motives are different and while sometimes the services may seem similar the underlying motivations are critically divergent. We should encourage this more broadly, though it can be difficult for a CO-OP organization to begin.
My idea is that the cooperatives work together to create a foundation that serves to help other small like-minded startups get off the ground and prosper. I suggest the name "CO-OP SPARX" as an interim handle. The foundation could be managed from staff from divergent CO-OP organizations and would exist to assist grassroots groups to mature, professionalize, and sustain their services.
The success of the idea is based on two assumptions.
(1) Successful cooperatives have serious business skills and resources that can help others succeed
>Mentorship
>Skills
>Meeting locations
>Bulk Discounts
>Excess Resources
(2) Cooperatives are full of mgmt and staff who are motivated by community service and the proliferation of the Cooperative movement.
Some benefits could be...
> CO-OP staff gain additional professional development experience in smaller projects that may translate to future opportunites at "home office".
> CO-OP orgs increase positive brand awareness and differentiation.
Thank-you for taking the time to read this idea!!
